Canada Retirement Income Guide: CPP, QPP, OAS and Savings

Retirement income usually comes from several sources rather than one pension. Public pensions, workplace plans, registered savings, non-registered savings and part-time work can each play a role. A useful plan starts with an estimate of regular spending and then tests how the income sources may change with age, taxes and inflation.

CPP and QPP depend on contribution history

The Canada Pension Plan and Quebec Pension Plan are contributory programs. Your payment depends on factors such as earnings history, contributions and the age you start the pension. Starting earlier generally reduces the monthly amount, while delaying can increase it. Your official statement is the right starting point for a personal estimate; a general calculator cannot replace your actual contribution record.

OAS is residence-based and can be affected by income

Old Age Security is separate from CPP/QPP and is generally tied to residence history. Higher income can trigger a recovery tax, and lower-income seniors may qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement subject to eligibility rules. Because these programs interact with taxable income, withdrawal timing from RRSPs or Registered Retirement Income Funds can matter.

Build a flexible withdrawal plan

A retirement forecast should show a range, not a promise. Test different investment returns, inflation, life expectancy and spending scenarios. Keep a cash reserve for short-term needs so market declines do not automatically force a sale. Revisit the plan after major changes such as retirement, a home sale, a spouse’s retirement or a change in health.
