Frequently Asked Questions

How much will my TFSA grow over time?

Growth depends on contributions, investment returns, fees and time invested. Investment income and gains earned inside a TFSA are generally tax-free, so a calculator can show how compounding may build the account over time.

Are TFSA withdrawals tax-free?

Yes, qualifying TFSA withdrawals are generally not included in taxable income. The amount withdrawn is normally added back to your contribution room at the beginning of the following calendar year.

Should I invest a lump sum or contribute monthly to my TFSA?

A lump sum gives the money more time in the market, while monthly contributions can better match cash flow and reduce the risk of investing everything just before a market decline. The better choice depends on available cash and risk tolerance.

What happens if I overcontribute to my TFSA?

Excess TFSA contributions can be subject to a monthly penalty tax while the excess remains in the account. Tracking available contribution room is therefore important before making new deposits.

Can I lose TFSA contribution room if my investments fall in value?

Investment losses do not restore contribution room. If you contribute money and the investment later falls, your room is based on contributions and withdrawals rather than the market value lost.

How this estimate works

Uses the contribution room you enter and stops planned new contributions at that amount.

Confirm room in Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) My Account and account for current-year withdrawals before contributing.
