Understand tax & employment
What is a marginal tax rate?+
Canada uses tax brackets. Only the income within a bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate; earning more does not cause all income to be taxed at the highest rate reached.
What is the difference between gross and net pay?+
Gross pay is earnings before deductions. Net or take-home pay is what remains after estimated income tax, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP), Employment Insurance (EI), and Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), where applicable.
Why can two people with the same salary have different take-home pay?+
Province, deductions, benefits, pension contributions, credits, pay frequency and payroll adjustments can all change the amount deposited.
What are the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), Provincial Sales Tax (PST), and Quebec Sales Tax (QST)?+
The Goods and Services Tax is the federal sales tax. Some provinces combine it with provincial tax as the Harmonized Sales Tax; others apply a separate Provincial Sales Tax, while Quebec applies the Quebec Sales Tax in addition to the Goods and Services Tax.
