What this estimate means
The lender tests a higher rate than your contract rate to see whether the household could absorb increased payments.
Before deciding: Passing this estimate is not a mortgage approval; lender underwriting still applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the mortgage stress test rate in Canada in 2026?
For uninsured mortgages subject to OSFI's minimum qualifying rate, borrowers are qualified at the greater of 5.25% or the contract rate plus 2 percentage points. The qualifying rate should always be checked against the current rules when using the calculator.
How does the mortgage stress test work in Canada?
The lender tests whether you could afford the mortgage at a higher rate than the rate you will actually pay. This higher theoretical payment is used in the debt-service calculation and can reduce your maximum mortgage amount.
Does the mortgage stress test apply to all mortgages in Canada?
Not every mortgage is treated the same way. Federal rules apply to federally regulated lenders, while some transactions, lender types and provincially regulated institutions can be subject to different requirements.
Do I have to pass the mortgage stress test when renewing my mortgage?
A straightforward renewal with the same lender generally does not require a new qualification. Certain straight switches to another federally regulated lender may also be exempt when the loan amount and amortization are not increased.
How much does the stress test reduce mortgage affordability?
There is no single percentage. The effect depends on your mortgage rate, income, debts, property costs and down payment because the calculator tests your budget using a higher qualifying payment.

How this stress test works
The qualifying rate is the higher of 5.25% or your contract rate plus 2%. The mortgage payment at that rate is combined with property taxes, heating, and 50% of condo fees for Gross Debt Service (GDS). Monthly debts are then added for Total Debt Service (TDS).
This is a planning estimate, not a lender approval. Lenders may use different debt amounts, heating estimates, credit standards and documentation. Selecting a 30-year insured amortization assumes you separately meet its eligibility requirements.
